TEACHING AND TRAINING THEORY

When working with children and young adults, my motto is "I want to teach myself out of a job". Passing on knowlege, not just teaching a skill, is very important to me.  I desire to develop young people into great all-around horsepersons who know the why of what they are doing so as to be able to use their skills more effectively.  Horses should be trained with a consistent, gentle yet firm technique to develop a trusting partnership. And let us not forget that this sport is FUN!

SHOW MANAGEMENT

Beginning in 2007, I organized and managed once or twice-yearly Combined Tests for the Middleburg Orange County Pony Club.  Then in 2011, I took over organization and management of The Middleburg Horse Trials (MHT), a USEA Area II Recognized Horse Trials. Under my management the MHT consistently started 175-230 competitors through all three phases of eventing from the Beginner Novice through Preliminary levels and continued to be a highly successful fundraiser for the Middleburg Orange County Pony Club. Most recently Jenn organized the Region 2 Junior and Adult USDF Team Competitions held at the MSEDA Dressage at the Park in Lexington KY.

BACKGROUND

My riding career began with Pony Hunters and taking riding instruction at Wright Way Farm in Landrum SC (founded by Gordon Wright). An early interest in training led to my discovery of Pony Club and the Eventing discipline. I competed successfully in Eventing throughout high school on a rescued Appendix QH and trained several horses who went on to success with new owners in the hunter/jumper and eventing disciplines. While attending Duke University, I captained their intercollegiate (IHSA) riding team. A post-college foray into Show Jumpers in the mid 1990s eventually led to several intensive dressage training years in southern CA where I discovered dressage could be challenging, rewarding and FUN.  I transitioned out of my environmental engineering career into a professional equine career to spend more time with my two children.  Our family purchased a farm in northern VA in 2006 and built facilities including 8-stall barn with amenities, all-weather footing riding ring, paddocks and pastures.  Prince William County presented me with their Clean Water award for my conservation efforts to protect waterways from sediment and animal waste. Flyover Farm was a successful boarding, training and lesson barn known for exceptional equine care.

In 2006 I became actively involved with the United States Pony Club again, this time as a parent and officer of the Middleburg Orange County PC.  I served as the Regional Instruction Coordinator for the Virginia Region Pony Club for three years.

Both my daughters have come up through Pony Club to achieve their HB certifications. The oldest, Sam, achieved her C2 traditional riding certificate and successfully competed at Training level in eventing.  She now uses her horse knowlege as a volunteer with the Therpeutic Riding Institute. Kate has achieved her C2 traditional and C3 dressage riding certifications in Pony Club and plans to test for her B dressage and C3 traditional in the near future.  She particpates in the Emerging Dressage Athlete Program, now TEAM (organized by Lendon Gray) and leased the FEI pony "Bohdjan" to compete the FEI Pony tests.  Kate transitioned to "Divo" a 12-year old Hanoverian gelding whom she competes at the FEI Junior and Young Rider levels and helped earn her USDF Bronze medal in 2015 and Silver medal in 2017. Katelyn often filled in as my "pony rider" to assist with training smaller equines.

Our current training project is a home-bred ISR/Oldenburg pony, "Bing".  At 3 years old, Bing was a member of a Region 1 Youth Dressage team and earned the High Point Championship at that competition with an 80+% at Introductory level.  In 2015, as a 5 year old Bing competed primarily in dressage earning the National Dressage Pony Cup Jr Training Level Championship, finishing 4th in the GAIG/USEF Regional Dressage Jr Training Level Championships, and debuted at first level with a 65%.  We began jumping Bing as he turned 5 and he is showing aptitude and interest in jumping.  After a winter of poles and grids, we ventured out to school courses of show jumps and cross country much to his delight. Bing continued his dressage career at at 6 years old earned a trip to the Festival of Champions where he earned 5th place in the US Pony Rider National Chamionships showing the FEI Pony Tests (2nd/3rd level equivalent movements).

Bing has joined Kate in California where she is working for Performance Farms and he is offered for sale.
